HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss collected five singles victories and four in doubles play during the opening round of the Crimson Tide Fall Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Friday.

Over 100 singles and doubles players competed in the first round of singles and the first and second round of doubles in less than nine hours at the UA Varsity Courts on the University of Alabama campus.

In singles play, Oscar Machuca opened his tournament with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Tyrone Ewels (UAB) in his first match of his flight. Strate Krstevski upended Guilherme Sahadhi (Troy) 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and Alexander Arendt beat Chris Doer (Mississippi State) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in their singles flight.

Markus Wessinghage notched a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 decision over Andres Amores (Jacksonville State) and Wade Covington beat Paul Boslet (Radford) 6-2, 6-4 in the Golden Eagles' lone straight-set victory.

Domagoj Anic lost his opening round match to Ted Angelinos (Virginia) 6-1, 6-1, while Andrew Poole fell 6-3, 6-1 to Thomas Petrich (UAB) in their respective flights. Southern Miss'Diego Machuca was defeated by Alex Moreno (Pepperdine) 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Callen Frayincheaud got beat by Adrian Tollstem (UAB) 6-3, 6-2 in his flight, while Will Thames lost a three-set match to Chris Slabbert (UT-Martin).
 

 

In doubles, Covington and Poole captured two victories with wins over Petrich and Miguel Artero 8-6 as well as Chris Duke and Joey Unkenholz 8-4 to reach the semifinals of their flight. Krstevski and Wessinghage defeated Jacksonville's Vinny Carveiro and Marcos Oliveira 8-4, while Anic and Arendt won over Eric Turner (NC State) and Pete Necajevs (Mississippi State) 8-2, before bowing out in the quarterfinals 8-1 to Moreno and Omar Altman of Pepperdine.

Play will resume tomorrow with the second and third round of singles starting at 9:00 a.m. Doubles action will begin immediately following singles.
