HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A first-place finish by Cornelius Duncan in the 800 meter race highlighted Southern Miss' opening day at the Alabama Relays being held at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Saturday.

Duncan ran the best time of 1:51.56, besting 47 other runners who participated in five different heats.

Parris Hodges was the only other Golden Eagle top-eight finisher as she placed eighth in the women's 1500 meter race with a time of 4:42.97.

Former Lady Eagle, Tanika Liburd, posted the best mark in the women's long jump with a leap of 20-5.25. She competed unattached for the event.

The meet will enter its final day tomorrow and start with the 8:00 a.m. women's hammer throw. The 400 meters was moved to 11:30 a.m. due to the inclement weather Saturday. All of the relay events will also take place as well as some field events to complete the meet.
