HOUSTON, Texas - Keyed by an 18-6 run midway through the second half, Houston out scored Southern Miss, 50-32, in the second half in defeating the Lady Eagles, 71-61, Sunday. Houston had to overcome an eight-point half time deficit.

"I believe this was the tale of two halves," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We executed out defensive game plan to perfection in the first half. We were able to hold Houston to 17 percent shooting from the field.

"However, I thought Houston did a great job of making adjustments in the second half by using a smaller lineup and causing a few mismatches. We struggled offensively in the second half and did not convert easy opportunities into points."

Pauline Love led Southern Miss (10-8, 1-4) with 19 points and 16 rebounds with Liz Biland adding a double-double of her own with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Eagles lost for the fourth-straight time.

Twiggy McIntyre led Houston (10-9, 4-1) with a game-high 24 points, followed by Courtney Taylor with 14 points and Tye Jackson chipped in 10 points.

With the Lady Eagles leading, 35-27, Jackson and Ryan Meyers combined for 12 points of the 18 points, giving the Cougars the lead for good, 47-41. Southern Miss cut the Cougars' lead to two on two occasions, with the last coming at 49-47, with 5:08 remaining.

Houston then outscored Southern Miss, 20-14, over the last five minutes of the game.

The Cougars got on the scoring column first when Taylor scored on a three-point play. Southern Miss quickly answered with a three-pointer by Barber to tie the game, and sparking a 9-0 run that led to a 9-3 lead.

Houston cut the lead to two, 9-7, on back-to-back baskets. From there, Southern Miss, then ran off seven-straight points, giving the Lady Eagles a 16-7 lead with 8:25 remaining before the half.

After Jasmine Johnson completed a three-point play in helping the Cougars cut the lead to three, 18-15, Southern Miss then used a 9-0 run, pushing its lead to double-digits, 27-15, at the 3:56 mark in the half. The Lady Eagles were able to maintain the lead and led 29-21 at the half.

Houston shot as impressive 51.7 percent in the second half after shooting a dismal 17.1 percent. Southern Miss shot 30.0 percent from the field and was perfect from the line (14-of-14). The Lady Eagles won the battle of the boards, 53-46.

Southern Miss returns home to open a five-game home stand, beginning Jan. 25 with UCF.
