HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's golf team shot opening rounds of 308 and 320 at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational to hold eighth place after 36 holes in the 13-team field, Monday. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,157-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. Sophomore Rebecka Nilsson (Laholm, Sweden) tallied rounds of 74 and 79 to rank tied for 19th with a 153 after the first day of action. Senior Jennifer Bodemann (Palm City, Fla.) and sophomore Clara Viladomiu (Barcelona, Spain) each notched a 158 stroke total to hold down a 42nd-place tie. Bodemann recorded rounds of 76 and 82, while Viladomiu notched a pair of 79s. Sophomore Samantha Holt (Pensacola, Fla.) recorded rounds of 81 and 80 for a 161 and a 48th-place tie, while junior Heather Golden (Biloxi, Miss.) put together circuits of 79 and 83 to end the day tied for 53rd. Kansas leads the tournament after the first day with a 600 total team score, followed by Missouri (602), Texas State and Kansas State (605), Arkansas-Little Rock (606), Nebraska (613), Illinois State (615), Southern Miss, Redlands CC (634), Evansville (636), North Texas (642), Wichita State (646) and Creighton (652). Missouri's Julia Potter shot rounds of 70 and 73 to hold down first place in the event. The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
