BATON ROUGE, La. - Desi Giardano and Jen Acunto each delivered solo home runs to lead Penn State to a 3-0 softball victory over Southern Miss in the second day of the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge here Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles (9-9) play their final game of pool play tonight at 6 p.m., against South Alabama.

The Nittany Lions (5-4) got leadoff homers from Giardono in the second and Acunto in the third as they added another run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Danielle Kinley. Six different PSU players recorded a hit in the contest.

PSU starting pitcher Jackie Hill (3-1) limited the Lady Eagles to just three hits as Allison Bullard tallied two of the safeties, including a double. In the complete-game victory, Hill walked just two and fanned six.

The biggest Southern Miss threat came in the bottom of the sixth. Bullard led off the frame with a double and Kristin Chaney was then hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Brandi Alonzo, Brittney Pigott lined out to leftfield. Kristin Pilgrim followed with an intentional walk to load the bases before Jennifer Fox hit into a force out to end the inning.

Southern Miss starter Samantha Davis (2-4) allowed all three runs on six hits and six walks with two strikeouts over 6 2/3 to suffer the loss.
