BATON ROUGE, La. - Autumn Hudson delivered the game-winning single in the bottom the of the eighth to lead South Alabama to a 1-0, eight-inning victory over Southern Miss here Saturday night to complete pool play of the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge at Tiger Park. The Lady Eagles (9-10) lost their seventh-straight contest after finishing the tournament 0-3. They did not advance to Sunday's championship round. Southern Miss had its best opportunity to score in the eighth. After a fielding error by USA second baseman Krista Rodden that allowed Ashlyn Harmon to reach base, Allison Bullard put down a sacrifice bunt. Kristin Chaney then hit a grounder to short that pinch runner Holly Milner tried to advance on but was erased on the fielder's choice. Chaney then stole second and had a chance to score on a single by Brandi Alonzo on the left side, but Chaney was thrown out in a rundown between third and home. In the bottom of the frame, USA (9-8) had a groundout before Jenny Stevens tripled to right-centerfield. That setup the winning hit down to leftfield for Hudson. USM starter Lana Vaughn allowed just five hits over 7 1/3 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-2.
Amanda Leggett (2-4) went the distance for the Jaguars allowing just two hits and one walk while fanning seven. The Lady Eagles return to action, Wednesday (March 5), when they play host to McNeese State in a doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. Game time is set for 5 p.m. |
