HATTIESBURG, Miss. - An errant throw allowed Megan Hill to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Southern Miss defeated Tulsa 4-3 in the final game of a three-game Conference USA series here Sunday at the USM Softball Complex. The win was the fifth victory for Southern Miss (12-12 overall, 1-2 C-USA) in seven games at home during the campaign. "Right now playing at home is helping us gain momentum," said Southern Miss first-year coach Howard Dobson. "It's great to play at home in front of our fans and get a win like this one." With the score tied heading into the bottom of the seventh, Hill laced a shot to rightfield that caromed off a diving Lauren Lindsay that resulted into a triple for the home squad. Brandi Alonzo then hit one back to the relief pitcher, Jackie Lawrence, who threw to Sara Dyer for an out. Dyer, who saw Hill creeping off third base, then tried to cut down Hill the runner, but her throw was wild enabling Hill to score the game-winning run. USM starter Samantha Davis tallied another solid pitching assignment as she allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 4-4 on the campaign. "Samantha did a really good job out there today," Dobson added. "No one's tougher than she is in crunch time. She stuck with the plan and kept us in the game." Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead as Hill played a role in the Lady Eagles' first two runs. The sophomore from Hattiesburg scored the game's first run in the opening inning on a wild pitch, before making the score 2-0 in the second on a RBI single. TU (11-11, 2-1) tied the game with a pair of runs in the third. Stephanie Chomicki scored the Golden Hurricane's first run on a wild pitch, while Vanessa Vice tied the game with a run-scoring single. Jennifer Fox then plated Alonzo with a single in the fifth to retake the lead for the Lady Eagles, but TU tied the game in the top of the seventh on a single by Dyer. Golden Hurricane reliever Jackie Lawrence (5-5) suffered the loss by allowing an unearned run over a third of an inning on a hit. The Lady Eagles finish a six-game homestand Wednesday (March 12) at 5:30 p.m., when they play host to in-state rival Ole Miss in a single contest.
