HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team split its double-header today, winning the first game by a score of 8-1, before losing the second game, 3-0. Southern Miss (17-19, 3-8) collected eight hits, highlighted by an inside the park homerun by Kristin Chaney in the first game that was delayed for one hour and 38 minutes because of rain. The last time a Southern Miss player hit an inside the park homer was in 2005 when Ashley Brenan accomplished the feat against UCF (2/25/05). Samantha Davis (8-7) earned the win for Southern Miss, scattered three hits over seven innings and allowed only one run while striking out six batters. Jennifer Nelson (10-14) took the loss for the UAB. Southern Miss got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Megan Hill singled through the left side. Holly Milner moved Hill to second on a sacrifice bunt. Kristin Pilgrim then reached base after being hit by a pitch. Jennifer Fox reached base on a fielder's choice. Lauren Castellvi delivered a single to left, driving in Pilgrim. Both runners moved up on the throw. The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the second when Allison Bullard single and Chaney walked. Hill singled to right field, plating Bullard. Nelson then retired the next two batters.
Southern Miss put four runs on the board in the fourth. Fox walked to start the inning. Brandi Alonzo came on to pinch run for Fox and advanced to second on a ground out by Lauren Castellvi. James reached on an error, moving Alonzo to third. Brittney Pigott grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Alonzo in the process. Bullard then singled through the left side, scoring James from second. Chaney delivered a line shot to right field past a diving UAB player for an inside the park homer. UAB scored its only run in the top of the six when Holly Krzan doubled to right center. Krzan advanced to third on a grounder to short. Andrea Rogers then hit a deep fly to center, plating Krzan. Southern Miss added two more insurance runs in the bottom half of the frame when Hill walked and advance to second on a fielder's choice by Milner. Hill and Milner stole third and second, respectively, before Pilgrim singled to scored Hill and Milner. UAB threatened in the top of seventh after Laura Callaway singled and Amanda Allen was hit by a pitch. Donna Plath grounded out to second ending the inning. Hill, Pilgrim and Chaney all collected two hits apiece. |
