MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Southern Miss took the opening game of the double-header with a, 2-0, win over Memphis, and lost the second game, 4-0. Samantha Davis (11-7) allowed only three hits over seven innings, recording her third complete game shutout and 11th win of the season. Kimber Bossom took the loss (9-9) for Memphis. The Lady Eagles finished with six hits, led by Kristin Pilgrim going 3-of-2 at the plate. Megan Hill, Lauren Castellvi, Logan James and Brittney Pigott added a single each. Southern Miss got on the board in top of fourth when Pilgrim reached base after being hit by a pitch. She then moved to second on a ground out by Jennifer Fox. Castellvi then delivered a two-out single up the middle, scoring Pilgrim. The Lady Eagles put another board in the top of the sixth when Hill led off the inning with a single to left. Kristin Chaney reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Hill to second. Southern Miss then loaded the bases with no outs when Pilgrim single through the left side. Bossom then got Fox looking for the first out. Castellvi then hit a grounder to third for the second, scoring Hill. In game two, Memphis banged out eight hits and used two, two-put rallies in defeating Southern Miss, 4-0. Southern Miss opening the game, placing runners in scoring positions with only one out but the Eagles could not push any runs across as Janelle Valle (9-6), who earned the win, retired both batters. Hill walked followed by an infield single by Chaney. Pilgrim sacrificed both runners to second and third, before Valle got Fox to pop out to second base and Castellvi grounded out to the pitcher. Meghan Harbuck (2-7) took the loss as she began the game with a three-up and three-down against the Tigers. James collected her second hit of the day to start the second inning. Harmon hit a sac bunt, advancing James to second. However, Valle was able to get Pigott to pop out to short and Bullard grounded out to the pitcher. Memphis was able to put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning. Kailey Kassner singled to left followed by a walk by Tori Gross. Maddie McKinney singled off the leg of Harbuck, scoring Kassner. The Tigers added an additional run on an error by the second baseman. Both teams followed with 1-2-3 third inning. In the top of the fourth with two outs, James reached base with her second single of the game. Harmon got on after being hit by a pitch, but Valle once again was able to get out of the inning with no damage. Memphis had another two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth when the Tigers had four-consecutive hits to score two runs, pushing its lead to 4-0. Valle allowed only two more runners on base with a walk to Hill and another single to James over the last three innings. Memphis threatened again in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases, but Griffin was able to work her way out of the jam after a single, a double and walk. Both teams return to action Sunday with the rubber game of the series beginning at 1 p.m.
