HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Miss women's tennis team knocked off Conference USA opponent Houston, 4-2, in action Tuesday in the Met at the Downtown Club.

"The two teams tried to make the best of the situation today," Coach Randy Rowley said. "We had to play inside because of the weather. Once again, our girls were forced to step up and play. I was pleased with the way we came out of this match, believing in ourselves because we didn't have Brittany Serret."

Houston (1-1) took the first point of the match, when Leila Salek (HOU) defeated Sherry Price at No. 1, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Southern Miss (2-1) came right back to tie the match at 1-1, after Stephanie Dellocono won her match in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, over Izabella Glinska at No. 3. Shannon Rogers gave the Lady Eagles a 2-1 lead, following a 6-4, 6-4, win at No. 6 over Neila Starratt (HOU).

The Cougars tied the match at 2-2 with Vicky Simpson (HOU) downing Lauren Gutterman in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5.

It took senior Ali Blackett three sets in giving Southern Miss a 3-2 advantage with a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, win over Lynley Wasson (HOU).

Freshman Zoe Lee clinched the match win for Southern Miss with a three-set win at No. 4. Lee battled back from down a set to take the match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), over Joanna Kaprzyk (HOU).

Southern Miss returns to action Friday, when the Lady Eagles host UAB at 2 p.m., at Tatum Park.
