HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team held off a scrappy Northwestern (La.) State team, posting a 4-3 victory in tennis action Sunday.

Southern (3-2) clinched the match in a thrilling three-set match, when Sherry Price came from a set down to knock off Bogumila Patzer, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5.

The Lady Eagles took the early 1-0 lead, winning two of the three doubles' matches. Brittany Serret and Stephanie Dellocono opened the match with an 8-4 win over Patzer and Kathrin Lange. In the meantime, Bianca Schulz and Maria Scriba downed Price and Lauren Gutterman, 8-4. Ali Blackett and Shannon Rogers earned the point for the Lady Eagles with a hard-fought, 8-6, win over Daniela Posada and Adna Curukovic.

The Demons evened the match at 1-1, when Schulz won at No. 4 singles over Lee in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Northwestern State took a 2-1 advantage when Posada outlasted Gutterman, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.

The Lady Eagles tied the match at 2-2, following Dellocono won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, over Curukovic, at No. 3.

Shannon Rogers gave the Lady Eagles the lead at 3-2, posting a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, win at No. 6 against Marine Neveu.
 

 

NSU took the win at No. 2, when Lange fought back in a third set tie-breaker, after being down, 4-1, to take the win, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3).

Southern Miss hits the road for the three matches, beginning Feb. 15 with a match against Memphis, followed by Murray State (Feb. 16) and Southern University (Feb. 17) in Baton Rouge, La.
