Mustang Rowers Head to South/Central Region Sprints
May 15, 2008
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (SMU)--The SMU rowing team heads back to Oak Ridge, Tenn. this weekend to race in the Aramark South/Central Region Sprints. The races will be held this Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18. Scouting the Mustangs/Last Time Out: The Mustangs are coming off a very strong outing at the Midwest Intercollegiate Rowing Championships (MIRC), where the crew took an overall second-place finish. SMU was hampered by having some technical difficulties with their normal varsity eight shell and having to race in an unfamiliar shell. But the crew was unfazed and pulled out a strong showing in the race. At the MIRC, the Mustangs won two of the three varsity four races, and took second in both novice four races, the second varsity eight and the varsity eight races. Prior to the MIRC, the Mustangs managed a respectable finish at the SIRA Regatta, placing two boats in the Grand Finals of their respective events. About the Course: The Aramark South/Central Region Sprints are held along the Melton Hill Rowing Course on Melton Hill Lake, which is fed by the Clinch River. The waterway is a part of the Tennessee Valley Authority waterway system and features a 2000-meter fully-buoyed seven-lane racing course. About the Regatta: The 2008 edition of the regatta will feature crews from Virginia, Tennessee, Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, Texas, Ohio State, Miami, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan, Michigan State, Louisville, Minnesota, Wisconsin, UCF, Eastern Michigan and Murray State. Last year, Virginia won every race, taking the team championship by a wide margin. Virginia became the first team in the regional's history to win every race- preliminary, semifinal and final. The year before, Tennessee captured the team title, interrupting Virginia's streak. SMU will enter three boats in this year's regatta; a varsity eight, a second varsity eight and a varsity four. Results: Results will be posted on SMUMustangs.com at the conclusion of the day's events. Results can also be found on row2k.com.
