SOUTHERN JAGUARS SET TO FACE JACKSON STATE TIGERS IN QUARTERFINAL ROUND OF 2008 SWAC TOURNAMENT

The Game Preview:
The Southern Jaguars will take a three-game winning streak into this week's quarterfinal round of the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference's Basketball Tournament, as SU will face off with the Jackson State Tigers at 8:00 pm at Fair Park Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Southern is the fifth seed, while Jackson State enters as the tourney's fourth seed.

The SU Jaguars and the Jackson State Tigers split their two meetings during the regular season, with both teams winning handily on their home courts.

On January14th in Baton Rouge, SU took a 85-69 decision, with Chris Davis leading SU with 17 points, while Jazz Williams connected for a career-high 16 points and Julius Ingram adding 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

JSU guard Darrion Griffin scored 24 points and sophomore forward Grant Maxey had 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals, and sophomore forward Garrison Johnson added another 12 points, all in the second half.

SU outrebounded Jackson State 37-28 and held the SWAC's top-scoring offense, averaging 84.3 ppg and 58.3-percent shooting in conference play, in check. Ten of the 11 Jaguars who played also scored. And the Jaguars bench outscored Jackson State 45-4.

On February11th, Jackson State's Jeremy Caldwell scored 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the JSU Tigers to a 85-71 victory over Southern University.

Darrion Griffin added 19 points and Grant Maxey and Garrison Johnson scored 13 each for Jackson State. The Tigers shot 53 percent for the game and forced 23 Southern turnovers.


 

 

Chris Davis led Southern with 26 points, Barry Honore' had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Julius Ingram chipped in 10 points.

Junior, Chris Davis leads the Jags in scoring with 15.6 points (1st in SWAC), while also pulling down 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Freshman Barry Honore' is averaging 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game (t-14th in SWAC), while junior Steffon Wiley is averaging 8.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists (11th in SWAC) and 1.6 steals per game (3rd in SWAC). Senior Joe Holliday is averaging 7.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, and senior Joseph Jack is averaging 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game (t-14th in SWAC), while blocking 1.6 shots per game (3rd in SWAC).
