Baton Rouge, LA - Even ugly wins count as the Southern University women's basketball team defeated the Alcorn State University 46-39. Southern's (8-10, 6-3 SWAC) Courtney Scott scored 12 points to lead all scorers. The former Glen Oaks high school star finished the game with five rebounds, three steals and an assist. This is Scott third game where she has led the team in scoring, but it was the hustle play of red-shirt freshman Freda Allen that help SU grabbed their eighth victory of the year. If she was not grabbing one of her 11 rebounds then she was collecting one of her four steals. The former All- Louisiana star also totaled seven points and an assist. "Freda is one of those players like Dennis Rodman was to the Chicago Bulls," said head coach Sandy Pugh. "When she's on the floor, special things are going to happen. Senior Fredrieka Lewis continues her assault on the SU women's record book as she blocked two shots to bring her career total to 151. The Beaumont, Texas native is seven blocks away from tying Tanya Tounsel for the career leader role.
SU travels to Grambling, LA to face SWAC rival Grambling State University on Saturday, February 9th. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. because the men's teams will be playing live on ESPN2 at 1:00 p.m. in the new Assembly center.
