Grambling, LA - The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team took game one 9-3 but lost game two 4-5 in doubleheader action today versus the Grambling State University Lady Tigers. Southern (21-16 10-4 SWAC) was led in game one by freshmen Victoria Stewart and Robyn Cathey. Stewart finished the game 3 for 4 with three runs and four RBI's. Cathey went 2 for 4 with two runs and a RBI. With the Blue and Gold hanging on to a 3-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning senior Tiffany Darville hit a solo shot for her third homerun of the year. Pitcher Brittany Gillenwater recorded six strikeouts and allowed eight hits to earn her sixth win of the season. Game two saw the same drama as Friday's game. Stewart once again led the way for the Jaguars going 1 for 4 with a run and a RBI. With the game tied at four in the bottom of the seventh inning Grambling's Jackie Deleon hit a single and scored former Lady Jag Denean Woods, who got on base by a walk, to give GSU their ninth Western Division win. SU still will remain number one in the SWAC West but will have to sweep the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions to win another Western Division crown.
SU will return home for their final home non-conference contest when the Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions visits on Tuesday, April 15th at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at Lady Jaguar field and the event is free and open to the public.
