SU CAPTURES WEST TITLE



Victoria Stewart broke the SU single game RBI record with five runs batted in today.

Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University softball team captured their fifth straight, seventh overall, Western Division Southwestern Athletic Conference title by defeating the Lady Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 9-1 today.

Southern (23-16, 11-4 SWAC) was led today by freshman Brittany Gillenwater who turned in a career day striking out 11 and only allowed three hits. Fellow freshman Victoria Stewart had a career day herself knocking in a single season record high five runs. Stewart ended the game 2- for 2 with two runs scored.

"The team came out and played ball today," said head coach Nancy Marshall. "We were really focused and showed it.

SU will complete their three game set and their 2008 season on Saturday, April 19th. Game time for the first game is set for 11:00 am with the second beginning at 1:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
