Bonnies take second straight from Mount St. Mary's
Feb. 29, 2008
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - St. Bonaventure pounded out 15 hits and received a strong outing from junior J.B. Britton on the mound as it cruised to a 10-2 win over Mount St. Mary's on Thursday afternoon at the Santaluces Complex. After a poor performance in his first start of the season, Britton bounced back by going seven innings for his first win of the year. Britton struck out seven and gave up four hits. Normally the teams starting third baseman, freshman Brad Steinbach struck out five on the nine batters he faced over two scoreless innings to close the game. The top half of the Bona lineup accounted for 10 of the team's 15 hits on the day. Senior Randy Moley finished with a career-high five hits in six at-bats, including a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Sophomore Anthony Randich defined the meaning of cleanup hitter, going 3-for-6 with six runs batted in. Freshman Jesse Bosnik recorded the first multi-hit game of his career, while Suminski went for his third-straight. The win improves St. Bonaventure to 3-2 on the season, while the Mount fall to 0-3. The Bonnies will have Friday off before hitting the diamond for a doubleheader against Boston College and Lehigh. St. Bonaventure's first four players to the plate all reached base as Randich capped things with a bases loaded two-run single to make it 2-0. Bosnik generated the third Bonaventure run with a leadoff single in the top of the second. After making his way to second on a pass ball, Bosnik came around to score on a single by Ricky Pillitteri to right field. After retiring the first three batters in order, Britton gave up a run in the bottom half of the second thanks to some lackluster defensive support. The Bonnies committed two errors in the inning allowing a run to cross for a 3-1 score.
Mount St. Mary's relief pitcher Costa Kapothanasis entered the game in the fourth and immediately ran into trouble. With Pillitteri on second and Suminski on first, Moley delivered an RBI double to left field to make it 4-1. Randich then picked up his third RBI of the game with a groundout to second that scored Suminski. Britton gave up his only earned run in the fifth as the Mount made it 5-2. The Bonnies took back the run in their very next at-bat as Randich brought in Moley with an RBI single. Moley doubled to left field with two outs to start things. St. Bonaventure made it a 10-2 final by plating one more run in the eighth and three in the ninth for its second win in three days over the Mount. Senior Josh Sova's RBI-single accounted for the run in the eight, while Randich picked up his fifth and sixth RBI of the game in the ninth with a two-run double. Steinbach picked up the save on the mound after entering the game in the eighth. He struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win. |
