Errors haunt Bonnies in loss to Lehigh in final spring break game
March 3, 2008
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Four errors by the St. Bonaventure defense allowed Lehigh to overcome just six hits as the Bonnies fell to the Mountain Hawks, 7-6, on Monday afternoon. Starting pitcher Cody Vincent was the tough-luck loser, going seven strong innings despite some lackluster defense behind him. Vincent allowed six runs, just three earned, on five hits while striking out five. Lehigh overcame a late 5-4 deficit with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to come away with its second straight win. The loss is the second in a row for the Brown and White as they end their spring break trip with a 5-4 mark. The top of the order continued to swing the bat well, as batters 1-4 accounted for nine of the team's 12 hits. Again, senior Randy Moley was the main culprit, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Freshmen Jesse Bosnik and Brad Steinbach combined to 4-for-10 in the leadoff and two spot, respectively. Sophomore Anthony Randich brought his spring break RBI total to 14 with a two-run home run. Randich's third homer of the season came in the top of the first as he drilled a hanging curveball from Lehigh starter Kevin Mihalik over the right field wall. The two-run shot came with two outs after Moley reached base on a single. The Mountain Hawks made it a one-run game, 2-1, in the bottom of the third and used three runs in their next at-bat to take a 4-2 lead. The lone run in the third came on a solo blast off the bat of catcher Billy Swensen. All three runs in the fourth were unearned against Vincent as a throwing error by first baseman Tristan Mulcahy with the bases allowed two to come in and opened the scoring.
St. Bonaventure chipped away at the two-run deficit and tallied a run in each of the next three innings to take back the lead at 5-4. Mulcahy atoned for his throwing error in the Bonnies next at-bat with a solo home run into the left field bleachers to make it 4-3. The game-tying run came across in the sixth as Mihalik issued a bases load walk to senior T.J. Pennino. The lead changed hands in the top of the seventh when Moley doubled to bring home Bosnik easily from second to make it 5-4. St. Bonaventure finished its Spring Break trip with a mark of 5-4, with a marquee win over ACC foe Boston College. The Bonnies will now have a week off from game action until they travel to Morgantown, W.V. for two games against the Mountaineers. Game one will be played on Tuesday, March 11 at 5 p.m. |
