Bonnies finish fifth at Detroit Titans Invitational

April 18, 2009

DETROIT, Mich. - The St. Bonaventure golf team will head into next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship playing its best golf of the spring season after finishing in sole possession of fifth place at the Detroit Titan Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

The Bonnies equaled their tournament-low with a round of 301 on Sunday to finish fifth out of the field of 13. The Brown and White carded rounds of 301 and 304 in Saturday's opening 36 holes. The fifth place finish is St. Bonaventure's best of the spring.

"It's encouraging that we're playing our best golf of spring heading into our conference championship," said head coach Andy Whalen. "Our top three guys all put together solid rounds today and that's what we need. I'm confident we'll also have some other guys step up next weekend too."

Despite shooting a 307 in the final round, Loyola (894) held on to win the tournament by seven strokes. Dayton (901) finished second, while Butler (903) and host Detroit (903) tied for third place.

St. Bonaventure was led by its big three of senior Brennan Payne, junior Nathan Peck and sophomore Chris Stoddard. The trio all finished in the top 20 out of the field of 70 and ranked among the tournament leaders in every statistical category.

For the second straight tournament it was Stoddard leading the way with his second consecutive top 10 finish and first top five finish of the spring and second of the season. Stoddard opened the tournament with a two-under 70 and followed with scores of 78 and one-over par 73 to tie for third place. Stoddard led the field with 40 pars and ranked third in par 4 scoring at +3.

Getting a chance to play just across the border from his hometown of Tecumseh, Ontario, Peck finished in a tie for fifth place in front of several family and friends. Peck's top five finish was his fourth of the season, as he was in the top 10 in par 3 (+1) scoring and par 5 (-3) scoring. Peck bounced back from a 78 in the opening round with a two-over par 74 in round two and a two-under par 70 in the final round.

Payne carded rounds of 76-78-74/228 to finish in a tie for 19th place. Payne led the Bonnies with 10 birdies on the weekend, and like Peck, he played the par 5s at three-under par.

St. Bonaventure will head to the Sunshine State for the Atlantic 10 Championships at Mission Inn Resort. The 54-hole tournament will begin on Friday, April 24.
