Bona golf in fourth place after first day at A-10s

April 24, 2009

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The St. Bonaventure golf team opened play at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a spring season-best 296 to take sole possession of fourth place after the opening round at Mission Inn Resort.

St. Bonaventure is 14 strokes back of first place Charlotte, who finished with a two-under 282. The Brown and White's 296 on the par-71, 6,887-yard course was also their fourth-best score of the entire season and featured 14 birdies. The Bonnies are just two strokes out of second place, which is occupied by both Xavier (294) and Temple (294).

"It's so important to get off to a good start and our upperclassmen did a great job making the happen," said head coach Andy Whalen, who is making his first appearance at the A-10 Championship as a coach and not a player. "It was tough to watch the guys give away some strokes over the final few holes, but overall it was a good day."

Senior Brennan Payne and junior Nathan Peck each carded one-under par 70s to sit in a tie for second place amongst the field of 60 players. An All-Conference performer at last year's championship, Payne's afternoon featured four birdies, three bogies and 11 pars. The Arcade, N.Y. native shot an even 36 on the back nine and finished up with a one-under 34 on the front nine after starting on No. 6

Peck opened his round with back-to-back birdies en route to his fifth under-par round of the season. Like Payne, Peck finished with four birdies, but all of his came over his opening seven holes. Peck also shot a one-under 34 on the front nine.

Making his second appearance at the A-10 Championship, sophomore Chris Stoddard battled his way to a six-over par 77 to sit in a tie for 23rd place. After a birdie on his opening hole, Stoddard ran into trouble on holes No. 11-14 playing the four-hole swing at seven-over par. Stoddard bounced back, though, playing his final 10 holes at even-par.

St. Bonaventure's final score came from junior Kristopher Boyes, who shot an eight-over par 79. Boyes had two birdies and eight pars on the afternoon.

Round two of the 54-hole tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. For complete coverage of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, log on to www.atlantic10.org
