Reverse fortune has Bona golf in sixth place after round two at A-10s
May 3, 2008 WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - Saturday's second round of the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championships at Orange County National Golf Center was a complete reversal from yesterday's opening round for St. Bonaventure as it capped the opening 36 holes in sixth place with one round remaining. Less than one day removed from controlling the front nine and struggling on the back, the Bonnies did just the opposite on day two. As a team, the Brown and White improved on yesterday's 10-over par back nine score by going four-under par. Unfortunately, the front nine was as friendly to St. Bonaventure as the past day as all five players failed to break par. "Today was eerily similar to yesterday in the fact that we got off to a good start, but gave away strokes in the last hour on the course," said head coach Steve Campbell. "We still can catch a few teams in front of us tomorrow and close the tournament on a high note. This is a great group of guys that will play hard all the way to the end." Charlotte broke its tie for first with Rhode Island by firing a 14-under par 274 for a two-day total of 552 (-24). Dayton's 293 put it at 572 for the tournament, good enough to surpass the Rams for second place. URI (278-295/573) is one stroke back of the Flyers in third place, while Xavier (292-289/581) and Richmond (293-290/593) round out the top five. For the second consecutive day, junior Brennan Payne was the lone Bonnie to break par with a 71 (-1). Payne is currently tied for eight overall at 71-71/142. His day included four birdies, highlighted by three on the back. Just like round one, seniors Ryan Swanson and Andy Whalen mirrored each other with even-par 70s. Both struggled on the back nine yesterday, but responded with under-par scores today. Swanson's eagle on No. 18 gave him a two-under par 34 on the back, while Whalen birdied holes 14, 16 and 18 for a three-under par 33. The senior duo is currently tied for 16 in the individual standings.
Sophomore Nathan Peck's five-over par 77 was the fourth counting score for the Brown and White. Peck finished at even-par 36 on the back, but was five-over (41) on the front. Freshman Chris Stoddard continued to gain valuable experience and turned in a six-over par 78. St. Bonaventure, again, will be pair with Xavier and Richmond for Sunday's final 18 holes. The trio of teams will tee-off at 8 a.m. on holes 6-10.
