Men's Soccer to play Rochester Rhinos in exhibition

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure's men's soccer team will play the Rochester Rhinos in an exhibition match on Thursday, April 9, at Corning Memorial Stadium at 7:00 p.m. "Once again we are excited about the opportunity to play the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer League (USL)," said St. Bonaventure head coach Mel Mahler. "Last year's match was a wonderful experience for our players and I am sure this year's event will be just as rewarding as we have an opportunity to measure our status as a program against the highest caliber of players in our region." Last year's game was a success between the two clubs, with over 1,600 people in attendance to watch the Rhinos beat the Bonnies 3-1. All tickets for this year's game will be general admission and will cost $5. Tickets may be purchased in advance through the following outlets: the St. Bonaventure University Ticket Office (716) 375-2500; the Greater Corning Chamber of Commerce (607) 936-4686 in the Baron Steuben Building on Market Street; or through representatives of the Corning United Soccer Club or Soaring Capitals Soccer Club. Tickets may also be purchased on game day at Corning Memorial Stadium. St. Bonaventure finished with a record of 6-6-4 overall in 2008 and a 4-4-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Brown and White finished the 2008 season tied for seventh place in the A-10 standings with 13 points, just missing out on the Atlantic 10 Championships by one point. The Bonnies were led this past season by junior striker Samuel Maheu. Maheu led the team in four statistical categories including, shots (43), goals (5), assists (3) and points (13) for the season. Sophomore goalkeeper David Flynn had an outstanding second season with the Brown and White, posting a 1.32 goals against average with five shutouts for the year.
The Rhinos play in the United Soccer League's First Division. They went 11-10-9 in their 2008 season, finishing in fourth place out of the 11 teams in their league. Rochester was led on the offensive end this past season by the midfield duo of Johnny Menyongar and Luke Kreamalmeyer. Menyongar, the Rhinos 2008 Most Valuable Player, tied for the team lead in scoring (17 points) this season while leading the team in goals scored (6). Kreamalmeyer also played a large in role in the team's offense, leading the team in assists (9) while chipping in four goals on the year. The Rhinos also field a solid defense, which allowed only 32 goals on the season, led by 11th year pro Scott Vallow in goal and USL First Division second team All-League defender Scott Palguta. |
