ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Senior day at the Reilly Center Pool was successful one, as the team earned gold is all but one of its events, leading to a 177-65 victory over Big 4 rival Niagara Saturday afternoon. Five senior swimmers and divers were honored on the afternoon in their final home appearance.

The 200-yard medley relay set the tone early, as the team of seniors Pat Henahan, Chris Happel, Dan Quirk and sophomore David Kundzik earned a gold straight out of the gate, posting a time of 1:40.03 for the win.

Seniors weren't the only ones with a successful meet on the day, as freshman Mike Dansa edged out junior Dan Eisemann in a torrid 1000-yard freestyle. Dansa posted a time of 9:55.14 to take first while Eisemann garnered a career-best time of 9:55.24 in a silver-medal effort. Eisemann later padded his medal count, taking gold in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.58.

Bonas first-year swimmers held their own on the day as well, with freshmen winning four individual golds on the day. Clayton Coleman led the way, earning gold in the 200-yard free (1:43.77) as well as the 100-yard butterfly (51.95).

Rob Erickson continued the freshmen surge, sprinting to gold in the 50-yard free with a time of 21.89, followed by Francisco Nieves in second, only .09 seconds behind (21.98). Nieves later earned gold in the 100-yard freestyle (49.19). Jacob Greene placed second in two events, the 100- and 200-yard freestyle with times of 49.99 and 1:48.67, respectively.

 

 

Sophomore Chris Baker was another of the team's many bright spots, earning two individual golds on the day in 100-yard backstroke (54.28) and the 200-yard IM (1:58.70). Happel followed Baker in the event and took silver for his second medal of the day (2:01.37).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Bonas swimmers posted a 1-3-4 finish, with junior Mariusz Michalik taking gold in a time of 1:00.06. Freshmen Ilya Nenashev (1:01.88) and Peter Koenig (1:04.87) rounded out the top four.

In the diving competition, both of Bonaventure's senior divers brought home two medals for the team. The 3-meter dive was swept by the Bonnies, with senior Jonathan Larson taking gold (275.48), fellow senior Ryan Pietrzak earning silver (260.48) and sophomore Trevor Herzog winning bronze (236.40). In the 1-meter dive, Larson dove for silver (282.23) and Pietrzak followed with bronze (250.43).

With a 7-4 dual meet record and the regular season now complete, the team will rest and prepare for the Atlantic 10 conference championships, hosted by the Bonnies. The event will be held at the Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo from Wednesday, Feb. 18 until Saturday the 21.
