Bona men end first day in eighth place
Feb. 18, 2009
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The men's swimming and diving team broke out in a record-setting way Wednesday night at the Flickinger Center, setting a conference record in its first race at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship. The team stands eighth after the two events held on the first day of competition. In the first race of the night, the 200-yard medley relay, the squad of senior Pat Henahan, sophomores David Kundzik and Kevin Murphy and freshman Peter Koenig earned gold in the event with a time of 1:29.43, breaking the Atlantic 10 record of 1:31.00 set by Massachusetts in 2007. The mark also set a varsity record for the men that has stood since 2003 by over two seconds. The second and final men's event for the first day was a disappointment for the team as it was disqualified in the 800-yard freestyle after a swimmer left the starting block early. The disqualification dropped the team from first place to last. Xavier sits atop the leader board after the first day of competition with 69 points, just three ahead of defending champion Massachusetts. The championships continue Thursday with morning trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
