Feb. 19, 2009
BUFFALO, N.Y. - After a slow start on the first day, the men's swimming and diving team used a blistering finish in the 50-yard freestyle to push all the way to second place Thursday evening. The team now sits 56.5 points behind defending champion Massachusetts with just two days remaining at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships inside the Flickinger Center. The team began its comeback in earnest, with sophomore Kevin Murphy (4.35.10) and freshman Mike Dansa (4:36.43) finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard IM, sophomore Chris Baker (1:53.11) and junior Mariusz Michalik (1:53.75) also finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to continue the team's rise in the standings. In the 50-yard freestyle, the team came out to a hot start with sophomore Jared Robinson winning the consolation bracket to earn crucial points. The knockout punch was delivered soon after as sophomore David Kundzik reached out and grabbed gold with a time of 20.61. Soon after, senior Pat Henahan posted bronze for the team with a time of 20.79. The top five times were separated by only .20 seconds. The team capped off the night on a high note, with its second relay gold in as many days. Kundzik capped off an impressive night by leading a team of Henahan and sophomores Jared Robinson and Chris Baker to gold in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.97, just .09 seconds off the school record.
