Bonnes hold tight to earn silver

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The men's swimming and diving team claimed its third straight silver-medal performance at the conclusion of the four-day Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday evening at the Flickinger Center.

With the long-distance 1650-yard freestyle, sophomore Kevin Murphy fought through illness to touch eighteenth overall with a time of 16:44.02. Freshman Mike Dansa placed fifteenth overall with a final time of 16:34.08 to lead the team.

To start out the final day, freshman Peter Koenig continued a solid performance at his first conference championship by placing eighth overall in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.62.

In the 100-yard freestyle sprint, the Bonnies packed the championship final with four swimmers. Sophomore David Kundzik proved he is one of the top swimmers in the conference with silver (45.50). Senior Pat Henahan finished fifth overall (46.01), sophomore Jared Robinson finished seventh (46.34) and freshman Francisco Nieves eighth (46.47).

Junior Mariusz Michalik and freshman Ilya Nenashev represented the Brown and White in the 200-yard breaststroke. Michalik took home his third straight gold in the event after touching in a time of 2:02.79 while Nenashev took ninth overall (2:06.46).

Senior Chris Happel helped the team to twelfth place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.45. Sophomore Hunter Baskerville finished fifteenth (1:56.23).

 

 

In the final diving event of their careers, seniors Ryan Pietrzak and Jonathan Larson placed eighth (192.00 in the finals) and tenth (230.90 in the prelims), respectively, with sophomore Trevor Herzog taking thirteenth (197.20 in the prelims).

In the championship's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Bonas left Buffalo on a high note, finishing with gold. The team of Henahan and sophomores Chris Baker, Robinson and Kundzik touched in a time of 3:00.94.

St. Bonaventure finished with 540 points for second with Duquesne placing third with 440 points. Rounding out the rest of the field were Fordham (415), Xavier (411), Saint Louis (314), La Salle (313) and George Washington (307)

Bonas ended the championships with a 100-point lead over third-place Duquesne. Kundzik was recognized as one of the top swimmers of the season finale as he earned 54 points alone for the Bonnies, good for second best overall among A-10 swimmers.
