Men's Tennis advances to semifinals to A-10 Tournament
April 4, 2008
MONROEVILLE, Pa. - For the seventh time in the last eight seasons, head coach Mike Bates and the Bonnies will be making an appearance in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Fifth-seeded St. Bonaventure captured its second win of the day, this time defeating fourth-seeded Duquesne, 4-1, in a mild upset in the quarterfinal round at the Club 4 Life. The Brown and White will now take on top-seeded George Washington at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Colonials defeated No. 8 Rhode Island, 4-0, in the quarterfinals after receiving a bye in the first round. Exactly two weeks, the Dukes defeated the Bonnies, 5-2, at the Club 4 Life. St. Bonaventure immediately gained the momentum of the match by earning a hard-fought doubles point. All three matches were decided by three points or less as junior Leo Mochizuki and freshman Chris Post earned an 8-6 win at the top slot. The tandem of junior Jonathan Luce and sophomore Diego Valdenegro clinched the point with the team's second 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. After falling in doubles play, junior Victor Lecina bounced back in a big way with a thrilling three-set win at No. 1 singles against Duquesne's Alex Mast, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2. Valdenegro gutted-out another win for the third point, defeating Mikhael Rasner in straight sets that both included tie-breakers. Mid-season addition Enric Larregola put the match away in convincing fashion with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the sixth position. The other two singles matches were suspended due to St. Bonaventure gaining enough points to clinch the match.
