Bonnies run ends with loss to Xavier in A-10 final

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The St. Bonaventure men's tennis teams' magical postseason run came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Xavier in the final round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Club 4 Life Tennis Center. "I'm really proud of how the guys played this weekend and I'm extremely happy for our group of seniors," said head coach Michael Bates. "We came in playing really well and that translated to us having a great tournament. I think we were a little fatigued both mentally and physically from the win over GW, but give Xavier a lot of credit because they also had to bounce back from a long match." St. Bonaventure, who was the number four seed in this year's Championship, started its tournament run with a 4-0 win over fifth-seeded Charlotte in the quarterfinals. The Bonnies then pulled off a shocking 4-3 upset of top-seeded George Washington in the semifinals to advance to the finals for the third time under Bates. Unfortunately, the Bonnies could not make it a perfect three-for three in A-10 Finals appearances, with victories in 2001 and 2003, after their loss in today's match to the Musketeers. Xavier picked up the first point of the match by notching wins at first and second doubles to go up 1-0. The Musketeers picked up the final three points of the match with wins at number two, four and six singles, respectively. Freshman Richard Canelas recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory at number four singles over senior Leo Mochizuki to make the score 4-0 and clinch the match for Xavier. The Brown and White finish their 2009 season with an 11-7 overall duel match record and return four starters from this year's squad next season.
