Post earns Atlantic 10 Sporting Award

May 18, 2009

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure men's tennis sophomore Chris Post has been named the male recipient of the Atlantic 10 Sporting Award, in a voting conducted by the senior woman administrators for each of the league institutions.

The Sporting Award is presented annually to a male and female student-athlete who exemplifies good sportsmanship. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a member of an intercollegiate athletics team in a sport sponsored by the Atlantic 10 Conference; be in good academic standing; be active within the campus community; embody the highest standards of leadership, integrity, and sporting conduct; be enthusiastic about the sport in which they compete; and have noteworthy act(s) of sporting conduct.

A 2009 A-10 All-Conference first team selection, Post led the Bonnies to a second place finish in their third-ever appearance in the championship match of the postseason tournament. The Lakewood, N.Y. native posted 12 wins at No. 1 singles and recorded a record of 17-12 at top doubles.

Post's signature match of the season came in the semifinal round of the A-10 Tournament at Yan Levinski of George Washington. Despite suffering from leg cramps through the later stages of the match, Post rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third set and facing match point to earn a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3) victory. Even more significant was the fact that the win clinched the fourth and final point of the match, sending the Brown and White into the championship. Immediately after the match, Post was transported by ambulance to a Pittsburgh hospital and was hooked to an IV before eventually rejoining his teammates.

Post returned to the court the every next day to take on two-time A-10 Most Outstanding Performer Doug Matthews of Xavier. After splitting the first two sets, the match was called when the Musketeers clinched the winning point.

Three days later, Post emailed Xavier head coach Eric Toth to congratulate him on the victory, to wish him luck at the NCAA Tournament and thank him for the way the Musketeers celebrated following the victory.

"Chris, very classy to send me a note," wrote Toth in an email back to Post. "What you did over the weekend was staggering. First off, your game has improved tremendously this year from battling your opposition's number one every time you took the court this season. Your match with Levinski certainly reflected that, how you were beating him in his comfort zone, from the baseline. Yan is the real deal. Then, to come back the way you did battling the pressure of keeping your team's season alive, fighting through cramps, fatigue, and whatever else you were dealing with was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen with so much on the line."
