Bonnies drop A-10 opener at Temple, 10-8
March 28, 2008
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Six straight Temple goals to end the first half proved to be the difference, as the Owls held off St. Bonaventure's late comeback effort for a 10-8 decision on Friday afternoon. The game was the Atlantic 10 opener for the Brown and White as they fell to 1-6 on the season. Temple picks up its second conference win and is now 2-2 in the league and 5-3 overall. Senior Kimberly Ross tallied a team-high three points on two goals and one assists. Ross' three-point afternoon brings her career total to 99. Sophomore Patty Nessle shared the team lead with Ross, also contributing two goals and a helper. Freshman Christine Hanley continued her strong play with two more scores, while senior Brenna Houghton was the only other multi-point contributor with one goal and one assist. Senior Eboni Preston made her eighth consecutive start in cage and the 41st of her career. Preston stopped seven shots. After surrendering the first goal of the game, the Bonnies stormed back with three unanswered scores to take a 3-1 lead just over 12 minutes in. Ross accounted for the first two goals, taking a pass from Houghton on the first and Nessle on the second. Nessle struck again four minutes later with an unassisted goal. Unfortunately, for the Brown and White their lead was short-lived as the Temple defense held the Bonnies scoreless the rest of the half. The Cherry and White took advantage of the visitor's scoring drought, scoring the last six goals of the opening 30 minutes to take a four-goal lead, 7-3, into the break. St. Bonaventure took back some of the momentum it had lost in the first half by opening the final frame with the first to goals to cut it to a 7-5 game. Senior Meghan DePaul got things going with her first goal of the season, while junior Keri Vito found Nessle for her second score of the game at the 24:24 mark.
Temple answered back just 53 seconds later with two tallies of its own to take back its four-goal lead, at 9-5 with 21:45 left in the game. Hanley restored some confidence in the Bonnies with a goal just a minute later to make it 9-6. The next goal of the game took nearly 11 minutes to produce, but Houghton finally converted on her third shot of the possession for a 9-7 score. A forced turnover after Temple won the ensuing draw control gave the ball back to the Bonnies. Houghton confidently found Hanley for the team's third consecutive score to make it 9-8 with 5:55 on the clock. Despite winning the next draw control, the Bonnies failed to get a shot off as they turned the ball over in their final two possessions. Temple iced the game with a score with just three seconds remaining. St. Bonaventure will stay in Philadelphia for its next A-10 clash on Sunday against Saint Joseph's. Draw time on Hawk Hill is scheduled for noon. |
