Jan. 30, 2009

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team was recently recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for having the fourth-best grade-point average (GPA) in the nation for the 2007-08 academic year.

The Bonnies posted a 3.54 team GPA over the previous academic period putting them in a tie for fourth place, with Mercer College out of a possible 320 women's soccer teams recognized by the NSCAA.

"I am so proud of our players for this tremendous academic achievement and honor," said head coach Manoj Khettry. "Not only have they shown great improvement on the field, they have shown great improvement in their Team GPA in the last 5 semesters. To be in the Top 5 Nationally out of 320 Division 1 Institutions speaks to our player's firm commitment towards their academic work."

St. Bonaventure finished the academic year ranked first out of all the Atlantic 10 schools in terms of team GPA, and are the only team from the conference to rank among the Top 10 nationally.

Individually, the Brown and White had 11 student-athletes make the A-10 Commissioners Honor Roll in the fall of 2007 and seven student-athletes make a return trip to the list in the spring of 2008. To qualify for the Atlantic 10 Commissioners Honor Roll, a student-athlete has to achieve a 3.5 GPA for the current academic semester.

St. Bonaventure not only excelled in the classroom, but also had a breakout season on the field. The Bonnies qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament this past fall for the second time in program history and first time since 1999. St. Bonaventure finished the season with an 11-7-1 overall record and a 6-4-1 mark in A-10 play. The Brown and White's six Atlantic 10 wins supplants the previous mark of five set by the 1999 team, while the team's 11 overall victories was just one shy of the tying the program record.
