Final Stats - Game 1
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The St. Bonaventure softball team's struggles against Florida Gulf Coast continued on Tuesday evening at the FGCU Softball Complex as the Bonnies dropped two more games to the Eagles to fall to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 against the host school. Following a day off prior to a stretch with six games in three days, the Brown and White returned to action tonight with 3-2 and 5-0 losses to the Eagles. Despite trailing by two runs heading into the fourth inning, senior Kirstin Strong's bat brought the Bonnies back as she knocked in a pair of runs over the next three innings to knot the game at 2-2 at the top of the sixth frame. Senior Brianna Bricker started the fourth frame with a leadoff walk and quickly advanced to second following a ground out from freshman Kara Morenus. One batter later, Strong laced a ball up the middle to send Bricker to the plate for the Bonnies' first run of the afternoon. After a scoreless fifth inning and the Brown and White still trailing by a single run at 2-1, Bricker again got things going by reaching first base after being plunked by the Eagle's pitcher. Morenus followed with a single to center field prior to a walk of sophomore Stephanie Narde to load the bases with Strong approaching the dish. With the bases juiced, Strong flied out to right field to bring home Bricker for the second time and tie the game at 2-2. Senior Patricia McKeon struck out swinging to end the inning with a pair of runners on the base paths. Florida Gulf Coast responded in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out RBI double from junior LeeAnne McDowell to put the Eagles back in front for good by the score of 3-2. In their final attempt to tie or take the lead, St. Bonaventure's first three batters were retired in the top of the seventh to end the game.
The Brown and White finished with just three hits on the afternoon as Strong played a part in both Bona runs and finishing with two RBI. Sophomore Sherri Thompson dropped her third straight contest after opening the season with a win to fall to 1-3. Thompson struck out seven Eagle batters, while allowing seven hits and three earned runs in six innings of work. In the club's second game of the night, the Bonnies failed to cross the plate for the second time in three meetings with the Eagles as Florida Gulf Coast notched a 5-0 win in the nightcap. The Eagles tallied a single run in the second, third and fourth frames to spoil freshman Sarah Signore's first career start on the mound before she was pulled heading into the sixth inning. Signore allowed nine hits in her starting debut and fanned three batters in five innings. Florida Gulf Coast added a pair of runs in the sixth to build a comfortable 5-0 advantage over the visiting Bonnies. Led by two hits from junior Kathryn Pazda, the Brown and White managed five total hits in game two while leaving seven runners on base. The club's best chance to light up the scoreboard presented itself in the third inning when senior Andrea Swanger and Pazda both found themselves in scoring position before a Morenus pop out ended the inning. The Bonnies return to action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's beginning at 2:00 p.m. |
