Bonnies continue trend with split at Dayton
April 26, 2008
Final Stats - Game One
DAYTON, Ohio - The St. Bonaventure softball team used a five-run sixth inning in the opener to capture a 5-0 victory in Saturday afternoon's first contest before dropping a 5-3 extra inning affair in the nightcap to post their sixth straight doubleheader split of the season at UD Softball Stadium. Following today's split with the Flyers, the Bonnies move to 18-20 in the 2008 campaign and 9-5 in the Atlantic 10. With the Brown and White win in game one, the club moved into a tie for fourth place on the all-time school record book with 18 overall victories, while St. Bonaventure's nine triumphs in league play moved this year's edition into the second spot on the program's career win chart within the conference. This afternoon's opening game of the doubleheader started off slow as both club's failed to cross the plate during the first five innings of play. After putting just a pair of balls into play through five frames, the Brown and White bats accounted for five of the club's seven hits of the day in the sixth en route to all five of their scores for the 5-0 victory. Junior Kathryn Pazda sparked the inning with a single before both of the Bonnies' next batters reached the base paths thanks to errors from the Dayton infield. With the bases loaded following the club's first three at-bats, senior Kirstin Strong responded with an RBI single, scoring Pazda for the game's first score of the game. The Dayton miscues continued in the sixth as senior Andrea Swanger crossed the dish following a wild pitch from the Flyers pitcher to bump the Bona advantage to 2-0. Sophomore Stephanie Narde and junior Amanda Kotz produced the next two runs with a pair of one-run singles. The Brown and White's final score came from a double off the bat of junior Ashley Kotz, bringing in pinch-runner Amber Webb-Fife for the final 5-0 outcome.
After a pair of losses on the mound in her last two starts, sophomore Sherri Thompson (14-8) returned to her winning ways this season with her 14th victory of the year. The second-year ace tossed her fifth shutout of the season as she fanned nine Dayton batters, while only surrendering three hits. Following seven scoreless innings through game one, Dayton tallied a pair of runs in the first frame to register an early 2-0 advantage. However, the Brown and White bounced back in the fourth frame with a trio of runs to retake the lead at 3-2. The Bonnies led off the fourth with a pair of singles from seniors Swanger and Brianna Bricker before sophomore Stephanie Narde brought them both to the plate with two-run double into left field. In their last at-bat of game two, Dayton knotted the game at 3-3 thanks to a two-out home run from Katie Jordan to send the contest into extra innings. The Flyers took advantage of their second chance by tallying two runs in the bottom of the tenth to clinch the 5-3 victory. A home run doomed the Bonnies again as Molly Myer mashed the deciding two-run yard ball through center field to seal the win. Thompson started game two as well and lasted nine innings after allowing seven hits and three runs, including seven strikeouts. Freshman Sarah Signore (2-7) was credited with the loss as she pitched the deciding 10th inning in relief. The Bonnies return to action on Wednesday, April 30 for a twin bill at Big 4 rival Canisius. This will be the second two-game set this season against the Golden Griffins as the two teams split the series earlier this season at McGraw-Jennings Field. |
