Johnson sets another pool record, Bonnies top Hoyas
Jan. 26, 2008
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bonnies made quite an impression on Georgetown's swimmers and divers. Not only did the Bona women hand the host team its ninth loss of its winless season, but senior Anneli Johnson set a McCarthy pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.76). This is not the first time this year Johnson has set the standard in breaststroke events. In a home meet against Pittsburgh earlier this year, Johnson set the Reilly pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:04.45. The Bona women had many single winners on the afternoon. Besides Johnson's win, senior Jessica Hober, freshman Natalya Ghostlaw, junior Allison Whalen and sophomore Allison Smith each contributed to the Bonnies' victory. In the 50-yard freestyle, Hober grabbed first place with a time of 25.52. Whalen swam to gold in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.77) and Smith took the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:37.58. Ghostlaw earned her first collegiate win in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.20. She headed a top-three finish in the event with junior Kate Cherry and junior Alexandra Quinn taking second and third place, respectively. The women's relay teams continued to prove they are the anchor to the Bonnies' success this season. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, senior Meghan King, senior Taryn Ahern, freshman Kara Small and Smith won with a time of 3:38.93. Whalen, Johnson, freshman Katie Valentine and senior Jessica Hober were victorious in the 400-yard medley relay (4:01.56).
In diving action, sophomore Gina Hendrickson posted a third-place finish in the three-meter dive, scoring 183.80 points. The Bona women improve to 6-2 (2-0) on the season and have only three meets left before they prepare to take on the rest of their conference in the Atlantic 10 championships on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The women return to action against St. Francis (PA.) at the Reilly Center pool on Friday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. |
