Bonnies hold sixth after first day of A-10s

Buffalo, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's swimming and diving team holds seventh place and a three-point lead over Xavier University after the first day of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Flickinger Athletic Center on Wednesday. In the first event of the A-10s, the Bonnies secured sixth-place in the 200-yard medley relay a slim .04 seconds above George Washington University. Sophomore Katie Valentine, junior Taylor Merena and freshmen Kayla Cobb and Lanae Petty swam a 1:45.01 to break Bonaventure's 200 medley varsity record of 1:45.01 set in 1994. The Brown and White placed fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:33.01. Junior Allison Smith, senior Allison Whalen, sophomore Natalya Ghostlaw and freshman Jamie Noonan touched the wall a slim .16 seconds behind Duquesne. In diving action, freshman Jaelyn Thurner scored 161.55 points for 12th place in the 1-meter diving preliminaries. At the end of the day, the University of Massachusetts is in first place with 107 points followed by Fordham University in second with 99 points. Fordham secured more than a 20-point lead over third-place Richmond who has 74 points. Saint Louis holds fourth place two points below Richmond followed by La Salle with 68 points. Duquesne follows La Salle only six points behind in fifth.
