Day Two: Men remain behind UMass, women fall to sixth

Final Stats

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The men's team trails the University of Massachusetts for gold, while the Bona women dropped two spots to sixth place after the second day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships inside the Flickinger Center on Thursday evening.

The women's leader board saw the Richmond Spiders take a commanding lead with 247 points. Xavier sits in second (184) and Duquesne occupies the third spot, with a tally of 156 points. Behind the top three are Massachusetts (156) in fourth place and Fordham (155) in fifth place. St. Bonaventure (119), Rhode Island (109), La Salle (101), George Washington (96) and St. Louis (82) rounded out the standings, taking places six through ten.

In day two's first event, the Bona women got on the board early with freshman Natalya Ghostlaw's second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle consolation finals with a team season-best time of 5:05.04. The sophomore tandem of Kara Small and Allison Smith notched seventh and eighth place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle final. Small and Smith both recorded season personal-best times with respective finishes of 5:06.02 and 5:07.21.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team managed seventh place, finishing with a team season-best time of 1:37.86 behind the performances of Smith and seniors Meghan King, Jessica Hober and Taryn Ahern.

On the men's side, senior Kevin Murphy captured eighth place in the 500-yard freestyle final, shattering his previous top finish by 10 seconds with a time of 4:37.30.

Seniors continued to play a big part in Bonaventure's success as Roman Margulis swam good enough for bronze (1:52.28) in the 200-yard IM final. Fellow senior Scott Jordan placed sixth in the same event, posting a time of 1:54.25.

 

 

In the 50-yard freestyle, freshman standout David Kundzik grabbed the team's highest spot on the day, finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.80), good enough for the squad's best time in the event this season.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, freshmen Chris Baker, Jared Robinson, Kevin Murphy and junior Chris Happel touched for fifth place with a team season-best time of 1:24.71.

At day two's conclusion, all men's teams are still chasing the Massachusetts Minutemen, a squad that racked up 246 points on the evening. Duquesne (166) lags behind St. Bonaventure (204) for second place as Xavier (144) and La Salle (141) took fourth and fifth place, respectively. Fordham (136) edged Rhode Island (135) by one point for sixth place, while St. Louis (91) moved up to eighth place and George Washington (85) fell to the ninth and final spot.

Both the men and women's teams will return to the Flickinger Center on Friday for day three action. Preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m. and finals are slated for 6:30 p.m. Comprehensive coverage as well as live streaming video of tomorrow's events can be found online at www.atlantic10.org.
