Feb. 19, 2006 QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams were victorious over Rutgers Sunday in the school's first ever on-campus invitational. The Red Storm women's team posted a 20-7 win and improved to 13-3 overall, while the men's team went 17-10 and improved to 9-5 overall. The Scarlet Knights lone win of the afternoon came in the men's foil competition. In women's action, St. John's swept Rutgers 9-0 in the foil match with Katia Larchanka (Minsk, Belarus) going untouched through three bouts. In the sabre contest, the Red Storm held the Scarlet Knights to a 6-3 victory. Freshman Olga Ovtchinnikova (Toronto, Canada) and senior Kasia Wiernoski (Warren, N.J.) both had strong performance taking all three of their bouts. Ovtchinnikova continues to lead the saber team with a 29-7 record. In epee action, St. John's fought hard on its way to a 5-4 win. Sophomore Joanna Guy (Toronto, Canada) went untouched and improved to 26-11 for the season.
In men's action, Luther Clement (Prairie Village, Kan.) led the sabre team to a 6-3 victory. He went 3-0 and improved his season record to 28-5. In epee action, junior captain Ben Bratton (New York, N.Y.) grabbed two wins, improving to 27-5, while Stan Vaksman (Odessa, Ukraine) was untouched through three bouts and improves to 18-2 for the season. The Scarlet Knights picked up a 5-4 win in the men's foil round. Rutgers was lead by Jesse Schibilla who went 2-1 in bouts, while Sam Wunderlich (Louisville, Ky.) and Misha Mokretsov (Khmelinitsky, Ukraine) both grabbed two wins each for St. John's.
