QUEENS, N.Y. - Eleven different Red Storm players tallied at least one goal in a 16-4 win over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field. Six other St. John's players recorded an assist in the contest.

The Red Storm dominated the Seahawks on both offense and defense. St. John's outshot Wagner 44-17, collected 16 more groundballs, won four more faceoffs, and allowed just seven Seahawk shots on goal. The Red Storm, meanwhile, took 27 shots on goal.

Sophomore Justin O'Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) recorded a hat trick, one assist and five groundballs in the contest while sophomores Graeme Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) each netted a pair of goals. Gillespie also picked up one assist and four groundballs. Freshman Drew Schanen (North Brunswick, N.J.) scored not just his first collegiate goal but also his second.

St. John's recorded its first goal less than five minutes into the game when O'Donnell connected off a pass from freshman Jamal Jones (Severn, Md.). The Red Storm went on to score 10 straight goals en route to a 10-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

Wagner got on the scoreboard with five minutes to go in the third quarter and then recorded three more goals in the fourth. St. John's, meanwhile, tallied six goals in that span of time to maintain its double-digit lead.

The Red Storm improves its record to 3-4 overall and is 0-2 in ECAC Conference play. With the win this afternoon, St. John's passes its 2-11 mark from last season, which was the team's first year since the program was stopped in 1995.

 

 

St. John's returns to action Saturday, April 1 in Easton, Pa. for its last non-conference game of the season. The Red Storm collides with the Leopards of Lafayette. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Lafayette leads the series, 1-0. The win came during last season when St. John's fell, 5-4, at home.
