GENEVA, N.Y. - Seven Red Storm lacrosse players recorded a point in St. John's 17-7 league loss at Hobart on Saturday. Senior Rob Gannon had a team high of three points with two goals and a season-first assist, while junior Malcolm Miles was second with two goals. Freshman Terrence Leach scored his career-first goal for the Red Storm. With the loss, the Red Storm fell to 1-5 in the conference and 1-10 on the season. Hobart advanced to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the ECAC. The Statesmen got on the board first with an unassisted goal by sophomore Doug Shiver halfway through the first period, followed by another from junior Jeff Colburn at 4:52 to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead going into the second period. Hobart opened the second stanza with a quick goal off the face-off win by Dan Spinella. The Statesmen tallied three more to take a six goal lead with just over three minutes to play in the half. St. John's registered its first goal of the game with 1:53 left to play in the half with a goal from sophomore Garrett Mitchell, his fourth of the season, fed in front of the goal by senior Tom Michaelsen. The Statesmen answered back with two more goals in the waning minutes of play. Gannon broke the streak with a one-timer past Statesmen goaltender Max Silberlicht, fed from freshman Joe Bagnasco with just 7.3 seconds left in the half. Gannon tried to cut the lead to five as he picked the ball out of the air on a rebounded shot, but his shot was blocked by Silberlicht as the horn sounded on the first half of play and the Statesmen took an 8-2 lead going into the third period.
The Statesman won the opening face-off in the third period and looked for an early goal but Hobart's shot was blocked by senior Chris DeMarco who helped clear the ball out of the Red Storm zone. Hobart scored once more to increase their lead to 9-2 until the Red Storm cut it to five with back-to-back goals within 10 seconds. Gannon sent in the first, picking up the rebound off a shot from Michaelsen and senior Justin O'Donnell kept the rally going as he scored his 15th goal of the season. Junior Dom DeNapoli scooped up the ball off the face-off win by Jack Rosson to pass the ball to O'Donnell who did a quick dodge in front of a Hobart defender before shooting the ball into the net. Halfway through the third period, St. John's cut the Hobart lead to 9-4. Hobart went on a three goal rally, led by two man-up goals to increase their lead to eight, 12-4 with five minutes to play in the third period. Miles scored unassisted with just under two minutes to play in the period, making the score 12-5 going into the final 15 minutes. Miles sent in his second goal of the game fed by Gannon who tallied his first assist of the season and third point of the day. Leach came in off the bench and scored the first goal of his Red Storm career with 1:16 left to play in the game. Leach scored unassisted on goaltender Brad Hester. Hobart scored five goals in the last period to finalize the score, 17-7. Up next, St. John's will host Fairfield on April 26 for the last conference game of the season. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m. on DaSilva Memorial Field. The Red Storm will honor its 10 seniors in a special senior day presentation. |
