GENEVA, N.Y. - Attackman Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) registered his second hat trick of the season and fifth of his career in St. John's 12-7 loss to Hobart in an ECAC matchup on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Boswell Field in Geneva, N.Y. The Red Storm rallied in the third quarter to close a five goal gap to two, but fell short in the team's final road game of the season.

Attackman Bobby Fitton (Oak Hill, Va.) and midfielder Justin O'Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) also contributed to the Red Storm's offensive effort, each netting a pair of goals while middie Tom Manes (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched two assists. Goaltender Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.), meanwhile, stopped 12 Hobart shots, eight in the second half.

In the first quarter, attackman Daryl Veltman tallied the first two goals of the contest to give the Statesmen an early 2-0 lead. Fitton responded for the Red Storm with a goal at the 9:54 mark off an assist from defensive midfielder Tim LaMare (Philadelphia, Pa.). The assist was LaMare's first point of the season.

Hobart recorded five of the next six goals to make the score 7-2 with 28 seconds remaining in the second period. Veltman picked up his third goal of the game while midfielders Sean Murphy and Nick Currie each netted two goals a piece.

Michaelsen made the score 7-3 when he connected off a pass from defensive midfielder Matt Viscusi (Floral Park, N.Y.) with 16 seconds left in the first half. Michaelsen's goal continues his streak of scoring at least one goal per game this year while Viscusi picked up his first assist of the season.

In the third quarter, the Red Storm battled back, scoring three straight goals to close the gap to two heading into the fourth quarter. Michaelsen scored the first goal in the run at the 9:15 mark off a pass from Manes. Thirty seconds later, Manes found an open O'Donnell for the score. O'Donnell then registered his second goal of the game with seven seconds remaining in the period to make the score 8-6.

The Statesmen ended the Red Storm's rally, netting a goal two and half minutes into the fourth quarter. Michaelsen made the score 9-7 at 11:11, picking up the hat trick. St. John's was unable to get any closer, as Hobart scored three more times to end the game with a 12-7 score.

The Red Storm is now 4-8 overall this season, 0-6 in ECAC Lacrosse League play. This is the second season for St. John's since the program was ended in 1995. The Statesmen, meanwhile, improve to 6-6 overall and are 1-5 in league play. This was also Hobart's 700th all-time win. The Statesmen become just the third program in collegiate lacrosse to reach the 700-win plateau.

The Red Storm returns to DaSilva Memorial Field Saturday, April 29 for its season finale to battle ECAC foe Fairfield. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. The Stags lead the all-time series 2-1.
