St. John's Lacrosse Looking To Make It Two-Straight Against Hobart On Saturday

    QUEENS, N.Y. - Taking to the road after a two-game home stretch, the Red Storm heads to Geneva, N.Y., to face the Hobart Statesmen on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in an ECAC match-up.

  • Fans can watch Saturday's game via the internet with live audio and video on ECAC.com/tv or follow the live stats on Hobart's web site www.hws.edu/athletics. The play-by-play will also be broadcast live on WEOS-FM.

  • St. John's (1-9, 1-4 ECAC) is looking to make it two in the row as the team just tallied its first win of the season. 11-7, over Penn State at home on April 12. The team will also be looking for its second-straight victory against Hobart in two seasons. When they last met, the Red Storm defeated Hobart, 13-10, at home on DaSilva Memorial Field. Hobart (5-5, 2-3 ECAC) will be looking to rebound off a tough, 8-7, overtime loss to the Massachusetts Minutemen. In the ECAC, Hobart has defeated both Penn State and Fairfield.

    The Series Against The Statesmen

  • Saturday's contest is the fourth between the two schools since St. John's restarted its program in 2005. It will be the second time the teams's will meet at Hobart.

  • The Statesmen lead the series 2-1 overall and in conference play. St. John's registered its first win against Hobart last season on April 21, 2007.

  • In high scoring 13-10 victory ov er the Statesmen on April 21, 2007, the Red Storm marked its second ECAC victory of the season in front of a record-breaking crowd on DaSilva Memorial Field. The game was tied 10 times before Jack Rosson scored the game-winning goal unassisted in the opening minute of the fourth period. In the win, the Red Storm forced the Statesmen to switch their goaltender three times. Seven St. John's players shot their way onto the scoreboard. Both Justin O'Donnell and Tom Michaelsen recorded hat tricks.

  • Last time the team's met in Geneva, on April 22, 2006, the Statesmen handed the Red Storm a 12-7 loss. St. John's battled back from a five-goal deficit in the third period to close the gap to two, but fell short in the team's final road game of the season. Michaelsen registered his second hat trick of the season and fifth of his career in the loss, while fellow attackman Bobby Fitton and O'Donnell each netted a pair of goals, while middie Tom Manes notched two assists.

  • The team's first met on April 23, 2005 in Queens, N.Y. Hobart defeated St. John's 13-9.

    Last Time Out

  • Senior Rob Gannon's hat trick led the Red Storm to its first victory of the season, 11-7, over league foe Penn State. In a game that was tied four times going into the second period, senior Justin O'Donnell led the squad in points with six points, a career-high in points and assists. Junior Trevor Michaelsen finally broke the ties with a man-up goal with 5-22 to go in the half. Senior Tom Michaelsen's goal six seconds later gave the Red Storm the two goal lead and PSU never tied it up again.

  • The Red Storm was excellent in man-up situations going 4-for-5, with Gannon scoring two and O'Donnell and Trevor Michaelsen netting one each. O'Donnell had a hand in each, assisting both of Gannon's and Michaelsen's goals.

    Storm Tracker

  • Senior Justin O'Donnell leads the team in points with 20 (14 goals, 6 assists). Against Penn State on April 12, he tallied both a career high in points with six and assists with four. O'Donnell has earned ECAC weekly honors twice this season.

  • Junior Trevor Michaelsen is second in points and goals with 14 and 10, respectively. Michaelsen has scored a goal in each of the last three games played.

    Career-First

  • Sophomore Gavin Buckley earned his first career victory between the pipes for St. John's. In the 11-7 win over Penn State, Gavin stopped 11 shots on goal in his fourth start. Buckley has played almost 286 minutes in goal and has seen time in seven games this season. He has faced 146 shots.

    ECAC Honors

  • Sophomore goaltender Gavin Buckley earned the team's first player of the week honor for 2008 as he was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 14 for his 11 save performance against Penn State. Buckley marked a season-high save percentage of .523 in the net.

  • In same week, the Red Storm earned two additional weekly honors as Rob Gannon and Justin O'Donnell were named to the ECAC Honor Roll for their combined nine point performance, leading to the 11-7 victory over Penn State. The three honors were the most the Red Storm has tallied all season. Gannon led the Red Storm in goals with his first hat trick of the season while O'Donnell had his stick on each of the four man-up goals for St. John's.

    Scouting The Hobart Statesmen

  • Hobart is 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the league with wins against Penn State and Fairfield.

  • Hobart is coming off a tight 8-7 overtime loss to University of Massachusetts. Hobart led the Minutemen 7-5 with two minutes remaining. The Minutemen scored twice in the final 80 seconds to go into overtime.

  • The Statesmen are ranked sixth in man-down defense (.804) and 11th in scoring margin (+2.5) and 13th in scoring offense (10.3).

  • Senior Daryl Veltman leads the Statesmen with 26 points on 18 goals and 8 assists. Veltman also leads the ECAC in goals per game with 2.57. Statesman Jamie Kirk ties Veltman in points with 26 and is the team leader in assists with 17.

    On Deck
    St. John's will host Fairfield on April 26 for the last conference game of the season. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m. on DaSilva Memorial Field. The Red Storm will honor its 10 seniors in a special senior day presentation.
