QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team ended a challenging weekend with a 6-1 loss to the University of Pennsylvania. Freshman Aliaksandr Sveltakov (Minsk, Belarus) earned the team's lone win against the Quakers. He triumphed over Brandon O'Gara (6-4, 4-6, 1-0(7)) at the No. 4 singles spot. Earlier this weekend, the Red Storm fell to the Tigers of Princeton, 6-1, at the Jadwin Gym courts on Friday, Feb. 24 and then battled it out with New York City rival Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Lions pulled away with a 4-3 victory over the Red Storm. St. John's is now 2-4 overall, 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
PRINCETON 6, ST. JOHN'S 1 The Tigers earned the doubles point taking two of the three matches and continued to win five of six singles contests to top the Red Storm, 7-0, Friday afternoon. In doubles action, David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) and Tom Green (Norwich, England) earned the Red Storm a doubles win at the No. 2 spot with a, 9-7, victory over Ted Mabrey and Alex Vuckovic. Meanwhile, in singles play, junior Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) grabbed the Red Storm's lone point at the No. 1 position. He defeated Sratha Saengsuwarn (6-2, 6-0). At the No. 2 spot, Nylen attempted to hold off Darius Craton in a three set match. However, Craton pulled ahead with the (4-6, 6-2, 1-0(7)) victory.
COLUMBIA 4, ST. JOHN'S 3 In both team's toughest dual match to date, Columbia defeated St. John's, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in New York City. The Lions remain undefeated (5-0), while the Red Storm fell to 2-3 overall. The Lions won at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots to clinch the doubles point and then picked up wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to steal the victory. In doubles action, the Red Storm grabbed a win at the No. 3 position. Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) and Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Vinay Bhamidipati and Jared Drucker, 8-3. In singles action, St. John's earned wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots. Desmarteaux topped Jimmy Moore (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 1 position, while Nylen grabbed the victory at No. 2 spot over Paul Ratchford in a hard-fought three set match. At the No. 4 position, Svetlakov knocked out Drucker, 6-4, 6-4.
PENNSYLVANIA 6, ST. JOHN'S 1 The University of Pennsylvania swept all three doubles matches and won five singles matches to take the, 6-1, victory over St. John's on Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm's lone singles win came at the No. 4 position. Svetlakov downed O'Gara in an intensely close match (6-4, 4-6, 1-0(7)). The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, March 3 when it hosts the Bearcats of Binghamton at Cunningham Park in Queens, N.Y.
