Men's Tennis Serves Up A 5-2 Win Over Rutgers Sunday Afternoon

  • Results vs. Rutgers

    QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team was victorious over Rutgers Sunday afternoon on the Courts at St. John's. The Red Storm served up a 5-2 win over the Scarlet Knights to remain undefeated in BIG EAST action with a 3-0 record while improving to 8-4 overall. Rutgers drops to 5-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

    The Red Storm grabbed the advantage early on in the contest by winning the doubles point. At the No. 1 spot, Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) and Alex Svetlakov (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Tyler Deming and Jonathan Wanono, 8-4. Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) topped Gordie Milchutsky and Gabe Adams, 8-4, at the third flight. Meanwhile, David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) and Tom Green (Norwich, England) fell to Arjun Vaidya and Matt Fawcett, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot.

    In singles action, Desmarteaux swept Deming (6-1, 6-1) in straight sets at the No. 1 spot. This was the second time the two battled one another this year. The first came at the Round of 64 at the ITA Regionals. Desmarteaux captured both matches. At the No. 2 position, Nylen topped Vaidya (7-5, 4-6, 6-1), and at the No. 5 spot, Bauer knocked down Fawcett (6-1, 6-2). Halim earned the final point for the Red Storm at the No. 6 spot, with a three set victory over Adams (6-3, 4-6, 6-2).

    Rutgers two points came at the third and fourth flights. Wanono topped Green (4-6, 6-4, 6-3), while Milchutsky recorded a win over Svetlakov (6-4, 3-6, 6-1).
