2005 Men's Tennis Spring Season Review
 

 

The St. John's men's tennis team finished the spring season on top with a BIG EAST tournament appearance and a third place finish. The squad fought through tough losses early in season to finish with a 7-13 overall record and was 3-2 in the conference play during regular season.

The Red Storm began the spring with losses in its opening matches to Pennsylvania (Feb. 5) and Army (Feb. 18). The Red Storm fell 2-5 at both events.

St. John's came back to take Air Force 4-3 at West Point, N.Y., on Feb. 19, but then fell in six consecutive matches to Manhattan (Feb. 25), Columbia (Feb. 26), New Orleans (Feb. 28), Louisiana-Lafayette (Mar. 1), Alabama-Birmingham (Mar. 2) and Southern Mississippi (Mar. 4).

A 4-3 win against Binghamton (Mar. 11) broke St. John's six-match losing streak, but the team dropped four straight to Princeton, Stony Brook, Georgetown and Rutgers.

The Red Storm answered with a change in the lineup and finished the season with three straight road conference wins against Villanova (Apr. 11), Boston College (Apr. 15) and Connecticut (Apr. 16).

At the BIG EAST tournmanet, the men's team swept Georgetown 4-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to Notre Dame 4-1 in a hard fought semifinal match. The Red Storm captured third place with a 4-3 victory over Boston College thanks to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 singles match win and 8-4 doubles win by Morgan Bauer.

David Nylen had a standout performance in the spring, compiling a 13-5 overall singles record. Nylen produced an 8-3 record at No. 2 and a 5-2 mark at No. 1, while having success with Bauer at No. 1 and 2 doubles with a 3-1 record. Nylen's perfect 3-0 performance at the BIG EAST tournament earned him All-BIG EAST honors.

Claudio Halim
Bauer finished the season with six consecutive wins, after dropping his first eight matches. His best performance came at the No. 5 position where he went 4-2.

Sophomore Claudio Halim had one of the best Red Storm showings finishing with a 10-8 overall singles record and a 7-4 doubles mark that included a perfect 4-0 record with Nick Stocker at No. 2.
