TAMPA, Fla. - The St. John's women's soccer team fell to the University of South Florida, 3-2, in double overtime at the USF Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on Friday afternoon. Just one minute into the second extra session, Bulls senior Katie Reed got a pass from senior Erica Lewis on the doorstep. Reed fired and the ball sailed by Red Storm goal keeper Rebecca Capinera (Watertown, Conn.) to capture the USF win. Both of St. John's goals came early in the first half. Sophomore Krystle Jalalian (Burien, Wash.) netted the first score off an assist from senior Holly Ryder (Plantation, Fla.) just inside the box, almost 13 minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Ryder connected off assists from Jalalian and senior Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) to make the score 2-0. The Bulls retaliated at the thirty minute mark when senior Jenny Mulvihill soared a 35-yard shot past Red Storm goalie Jamie Beran (Tucson, Ariz.) to make the score 2-1. An assist was awarded to Reed. With seven minutes left in the first, Beran made a leaping save to stop USF's Reed from tying the match. Beran knocked the ball down with her finger tips and then hustled to take possession of the ball. The first half ended with St. John's up 2-1. But four minutes into the second half, senior Erica Lewis skirted the ball by Capinera on the bottom right side near the post to knot the score at 2. Senior Andrea Coukoulis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was issued a red card for a professional foul with eight and a half minutes in the game, which gave the Bulls a one player advantage for the rest of the game.
St. John's is still in the hunt for a BIG EAST tournament berth despite the loss. The Red Storm was tied with Pittsburgh coming into today's game for the fifth position in the "A" Division. The Panthers collide with Providence later today. However, the USF win puts the team in the hunt for the fifth position and the playoff berth. The time of today's match was changed do to the threat of Hurricane Wilma, a possible category four storm. Rain did fall, however, throughout the second half and overtime sessions. The Red Storm travels to conference newcomer No. 13/11 Marquette for its last regular season match of the year, Sunday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. It is the first meeting ever between the two teams.
