Women's Soccer Splits Matches Over The Weekend

April 14, 2008

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team continued its spring season this past weekend and traveled to Lancaster, Mass., where it defeated Boston College, 3-0, before losing a close match, 1-0, to Central Connecticut State.

The Red Storm took the early lead against the Eagles when Raelynne Lee found the back of the net in the 15th minute. The freshman slipped past a defender and placed the ball over the goalie's head. In the second half, St. John's added an insurance goal when Courtney Lane powered the ball past the diving keeper on a free kick. The final score of the game came off of the foot of Brittany Cavarra in the 55th minute. After Jessica Simonetti won the ball and played it to Sarah McGrath, Cavarrra finished strong to add to the Red Storm's lead.

"It was an outstanding team effort," said head women's soccer coach Ian Stone. "I am happy with the team's defensive shape down the line. We worked together and that made it very hard for a talented BC team to score against us."

In the second game of the day, CCSU scored the lone goal of the game off a free kick. St. John's looked to tie the contest when Tatiana Duggan pushed one past the keeper, however, the Red Storm was called offside and the score did not count.

"It was a let down after the first game," Stone said. "It was combination of things including a long day, but we need to be more consistent and bring the same level of intensity."

Rebecca Capinera had a strong day in goal for St. John's, playing in both contests. She first posted the shutout against BC, who finished the 2007 season ranked No. 24 in the NSCAA Top 25 Poll, and then held her team in the match against Central Connecticut State.

The women's soccer team will host its annual alumnae match at Belson Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m. and then will continue spring action on the road at Villanova on Sunday at 1 p.m.
