Game Notes
QUEENS, N.Y. -
The St. John's softball team heads to Syracuse and then Pittsburgh on a four-day, four-game, BIG EAST road trip. The Red Storm takes on the Orange in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. St. John's will have a travel day on Saturday before taking on the Panthers in a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
The Red Storm trails the all-time series with Syracuse, 8-6.
The two teams faced off earlier this season in a non-conference game at the College of Charleston Tournament on March 15. The game went nine innings before Syracuse scored to take the game 3-2.
St. John's leads the all-time series with Pittsburgh, 10-6.
Pittsburgh and St. John's split its doubleheader last season. The Panthers took the first game 5-1, but the Red Storm prevailed in game two, 8-2.
The Red Storm is coming off a 10-0, five inning win versus the Red Foxes of Marist in which freshman starter Kat Lawrence tossed a perfect game with 12 strikeouts.
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
The Orange are 14-25 this season and 5-6 in the BIG EAST Conference.
Syracuse went 21-31, 9-11 last year. The Orange returns nine letterwinners including seven starters and two pitchers.
Head coach Leigh Ross boasts a career record of 258-229-2 in 10 seasons.
Last time out, senior Chanel Roehner and sophomore Brittany Gardner shared time in the circle. Roehner threw 5.0 innings, striking out four before Gardner went 4.0 innings, earning the win.
SU returns home after a six-game road trip. The last time the Orange played at home, Gardner threw 11.2 innings, striking out 13 for a pair of victories against Niagara. She pitched 4.2 innings en route to a 6-4, game-one win and went the distance, striking out a season-high 10 in SU's 2-1, night-cap win.
Syracuse is 4-2 at the SU Softball Stadium with sweeps against Providence and Niagara. Gardner owns a 3-1 record at home with a 0.55 ERA and 28 strikeouts. Junior catcher Amy Kelley is batting a team-high .438 with six RBI and a .813 slugging percentage.
Junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek is coming off a 4-for-6, four RBI doubleheader performances at Cornell on Wednesday. During game one, she went 3-for-3, including an RBI double and followed with a two run home run during game two. She is batting .257 this season with eight RBI, two home runs and 12 runs scored.
SCOUTING PITTSBURGH
The Panthers are 24-17 this year and 7-5 in the BIG EAST.
Pittsburgh went 23-35, 8-12 a season ago. The Panthers return 11 letterwinners. Pitt also returns six starters from last season as well as two pitchers.
Head coach Michelle Phalen is in her tenth year with the Panthers and is 195-304-1 in that time.
Pitt is batting .234 as a team with Jessica Dignon as their leading offense producer. Dignon is batting .364 with five home runs, 32 RBI and 24 runs.
Sam Card follows with a .356 average, and leads the conference with eight home runs.
The Panthers have a 1.70 team ERA with Cory Berliner shouldering most of the pitching duties with a 1.45 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 140.1 innings of work. Kayla Zinger (8-7) carries a 1.84 ERA with 44 Ks in 83.2 IP.
