QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon on the Courts at St. John's. The win improved the Red Storm's record to 9-10 overall, while the Knights dropped to 5-7. St. John's took an early lead in the match by winning the doubles point. The pair of freshmen Emily Barnett/Jenny Yonkus shutout FDU's Jinny DeCarlos/Christina Martine, 8-0 at No. 3. That win, combined with the win by the duo of sophomore Ira Aleksova/senior Maria Zivcicova at No. 1 put STJ up, 1-0. In singles, Zivcicova shutout her opponent, Julija Korshunova, at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-0, while Barnett went to three sets with Ksenia Chernyshova and won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 2. Aleksova and Yonkus also defeated their opponents at Nos. 3 and 6, respectively. Senior Ashley Harper won her fourth straight match by defeating Jinny DeCarlos, 6-1, 6-0. The Red Storm returns to action on Monday, April 14, when the team hosts local rival, Queens College. The contest will be the last home matches for St. John's grad student Alison Adamski, and seniors Mariana Chachua, Zivcicova, and Harper.
