TAMPA, Fla. - The St. John's women's tennis team lost its first match since March 29 Friday afternoon, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championships. The second-seeded, No. 41 Louisville Cardinals defeated the Red Storm, 4-1, on the University of South Florida's Varsity Courts, earning UofL a spot in the semifinals. The loss puts an end to STJ's eight-match win streak and leaves the team's record at 10-11, while Louisville improves to 16-6. The Cardinals won the doubles point and took an early 1-0 lead in the match by picking up two victories. UofL's pairs at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots defeated St. John's Ira Aleksova/Maria Zivcicova and Ashley Harper/Mariana Chachua, 8-2 and 8-3, respectively. In singles, at the top-spot, Zivcicova picked up a straight-set victory over the Cardinals' Lauren Imre, 6-4, 6-2. Chachua and graduate student Alison Adamski were up in their singles matches but the Cardinals won three points at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 before the two were able to finish, thus clinching the match, 4-1. St. John's awaits its seeding in the consolation bracket, which will be determined once Friday's action concludes.
