QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Phobay Kutu-Akoi and freshman Priscilla Frederick earned All-East honors at this weekend's ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championship held at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston, Mass.

As a team, the Red Storm finished with five points, tying them for 36th out of 53 teams.

Kutu-Akoi had a season-best performance in the semi-finals of the 60-meter dash on Saturday, March 8 with a seventh place finish of 7.61 seconds. Her time qualified her for Sunday's finals where she placed seventh overall with a time of 7.70 seconds. Junior Paula Rennalls also competed in the event, but finished 23rd in the preliminaries with a time of 7.83 seconds.

Kutu-Akoi also competed in the 200-meter dash where she finished 26th with a time of 25.47 seconds.

In the high jump, Frederick also earned All-East honors, tying Keyll Kajunski from Rider and Toni Aluko from Maryland for fifth place with a height of 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches).

Graduate student Kellie Brown also competed for the Red Storm at her second Indoor ECAC Championship in three years. Brown's distance of 11.48 meters (37 feet, 8 inches) in the triple jump was good enough for an 18th place finish, her second best performance in the event this season.

The Red Storm's relay teams both earned season-best performances. The power squad of sophomores Asia Nettles, Asia Davy, Kutu-Akoi, anchored by Rennalls finished 14th in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing the tape at 3:51.41. The same team qualified for the ECAC Championships at 3:52.60.

 

 

Anchored by freshman Shakira Best, the 4x800-meter squad finished 12th with a time of 9:19.19 minutes. The team was led by junior Tyneka Greene followed by freshmen Sarah Sudbury and Ashlee Payne. Their second best time qualified them for the ECACs at 9:22.18.

Up next, the Red Storm track & field team will travel to Miami, Fla., to compete in the Miami Gatorade Invitational on March 15. The Indoor ECAC Championship marked the end to the 2008 Indoor track & field season.
